Most startups dream of the day the world learns their name. For Astronomer, that day came not through a product launch or a major IPO, but via a viral clip from a Coldplay concert.

A kiss cam, two senior executives, and one perfectly timed reaction turned this once low-profile data company into a headline-grabbing brand overnight.

Now, Astronomer’s interim CEO, Pete DeJoy, is facing the spotlight, and owning the moment with surprising candor.

In a LinkedIn post titled “Moving Forward at Astronomer”, DeJoy wrote:

“The spotlight has been unusual and surreal for our team and, while I would never have wished for it to happen like this, Astronomer is now a household name.”

He added:

“Our mission is bigger than any one moment… From starting a software company in Cincinnati, Ohio, to keeping the lights on through the collapse of the bank that held all our cash, to scaling from 30 to 300 people during a global pandemic, Astronomer has never shied away from challenges.”

A Kiss Cam and an Instant PR Storm for Astronomer

The incident took place on July 16 at Gillette Stadium in Boston during a Coldplay concert. The stadium’s kiss cam zoomed in on Andy Byron, then-CEO of Astronomer, and Kristin Cabot, the company’s Chief People Officer. The pair were sitting closely, and visibly startled when they appeared on the big screen.

As the audience reacted, Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin commented:

“Oh look at these two… Either they’re having an affair or they’re very shy.”

Byron ducked behind a barrier, and Cabot covered her face in embarrassment. The clip quickly spread online.

The situation escalated once viewers discovered that both executives are married, but not to each other. The video went viral, followed by intense public criticism.

By Saturday, Byron had resigned, and Astronomer released a formal statement:

“Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.”

A formal internal investigation was also launched.

What Is Astronomer?

Behind the headlines is a company with real technical credibility. Astronomer is a New York-based software firm best known for its product Astro, a cloud-native platform built on Apache Airflow. The platform allows companies to automate, monitor, and scale complex data workflows.

According to the company:

“Astronomer empowers data teams to bring mission-critical analytics, AI, and software to life and is the company behind Astro, the industry-leading DataOps platform powered by Apache Airflow.”

In simpler terms, Astronomer ensures that data moves quickly and accurately, enabling everything from real-time dashboards to machine learning predictions.

How Big Is the Company?

In May 2025, Astronomer completed its Series D funding round, valuing the company between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion.

Andy Byron, who became CEO in July 2023, is estimated to have held between 1% to 5% equity in the company. That translates to a potential stake worth between $12 million to $65 million. Factoring in his prior roles and compensation, his total net worth is estimated at $20 million to $70 million.

Kristin Cabot joined Astronomer in November 2024 as Chief People Officer. Based in Boston, she previously held leadership roles at Neo4j, Proofpoint, and ObserveIT.

She is known for her expertise in employee engagement, HR strategy, and diversity hiring. Reports also revealed she is married to Andrew Cabot, further fueling public interest in the scandal.

From Viral Scandal to Unexpected Exposure

This wasn’t the way Astronomer planned to raise its profile. But for better or worse, it worked.

Millions of people who had never heard of the company now know the name, and its mission.

And under the leadership of Pete DeJoy, Astronomer seems focused on what comes next.

“We’re not defined by any one moment,” DeJoy said. “We’ll keep building.”

In a strange twist of fate, a kiss cam may have done more to boost Astronomer’s brand awareness than any marketing campaign ever could.

Now all eyes are on whether the company can turn that attention into long-term momentum.
