The MADANI Government, through the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, has officially launched “I LITE U”, a strategic urban lighting initiative designed to transform Kuala Lumpur’s nightscape while strengthening the city’s appeal as a world class tourism destination.
The launch took place at Centre Court, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and was officiated by Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia. The event was further elevated by the presence of Michelle Yeoh, Malaysia’s internationally acclaimed actress and Academy Award winner.
Setting the Stage for Visit Malaysia 2026

“I LITE U” marks an early highlight for Visit Malaysia 2026, which targets 28 million tourist arrivals and RM76 billion in tourism receipts. Beyond visual appeal, the initiative is intended to deliver direct benefits to the public, creating safer, more vibrant and more welcoming urban spaces at night.
Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming emphasised that the project goes beyond aesthetics and city branding.
“This modern lighting infrastructure is not only meant to beautify Kuala Lumpur’s nightscape, but also to enhance pedestrian safety and comfort while stimulating local economic activity,” he said.
A Meaningful Moment for Malaysia on the Global Stage

Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh described her participation as deeply meaningful, especially as Malaysia prepares to welcome visitors from around the world in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026.
Her presence underscored the initiative’s message of confidence, creativity and global readiness, positioning Kuala Lumpur as a city that blends culture, sustainability and innovation.
Bukit Bintang was selected as the pilot area due to its role as Kuala Lumpur’s key tourism and commercial hub. The launch celebration featured a parade and cultural performances involving nearly 20 contingents from various ministries, agencies and educational institutions.
Four Key Components of the “I LITE U” Pilot Project

The Bukit Bintang pilot includes four main elements:
- Installation of gateway lighting to create a distinctive and welcoming entrance
- Construction of a Visit Malaysia 2026 landmark sculpture
- Upgrading existing pedestrian crossings with brighter and safer lighting
- Building new pedestrian crossings with enhanced illumination to improve night time walkability and safety
Together, these components aim to create a cohesive, people friendly night environment that supports tourism and everyday urban life.
Strong Multi Agency Collaboration

“I LITE U” is jointly led by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the Prime Minister’s Department for the Federal Territories, and Kuala Lumpur City Hall. Strategic partners include Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur City Centre, PR1MA Malaysia, YTL Land, and Grab Malaysia.
The Ministry stressed that Visit Malaysia 2026 is not solely about beautifying cities. It also focuses on cleanliness, public responsibility and the overall visitor experience. The Community Service Order, implemented from 1 January 2026, forms part of a broader effort to ensure Malaysia is clean, safe and welcoming for both tourists and residents.
Also in attendance were the Minister for the Federal Territories, YB Puan Hannah Yeoh, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Communications, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, YB Datuk Hajah Aiman Athirah binti Sabu, as well as the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, YBhg.
