The next time you are waiting for the LRT and finishing a drink, that empty bottle in your hand does not have to end up in the rubbish bin. At selected LRT stations, commuters can now recycle plastic bottles and drink cans and receive digital rewards in return, following the rollout of smart recycling machines by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad.
It may seem like a small addition to station facilities, but the idea behind it is bigger. By placing recycling machines directly where people already spend time, Prasarana is making sustainability part of the daily commute, not a separate effort that requires planning or extra steps.
Recycling That Fits Into Everyday Routines

The initiative centres on the installation of Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) at busy and strategic locations.
So far, five RVMs have been installed at LRT Masjid Jamek, one of the busiest interchange stations in the Klang Valley. Two machines each have also been placed at LRT KLCC and Menara Prasarana.
These stations were chosen because of their high passenger volumes, serving office workers, students, tourists, and families every day. Instead of asking commuters to change their habits, the approach is simple. If you are already waiting for the train, recycling can happen at the same time.
There is no need to carry bottles home or remember to recycle later. It happens in the same few minutes you would otherwise spend scrolling on your phone or checking train timings.
How the Machines Work and Why People Use Them
Two types of smart recycling machines are currently available.
The first is KLEAN, an AI-powered RVM that accepts plastic bottles and aluminium cans. Once an item is inserted, the machine automatically recognises it and credits the user with digital reward points through a mobile application.

These points can be redeemed for vouchers from everyday brands such as ZUS Coffee, Grab, and Jaya Grocer. The rewards are modest, but meaningful enough to turn recycling into a habit rather than a chore.
The second is ATLAS ECOPOD, which holds a Guinness World Records title as the world’s thinnest recycling machine. Installed next to ATLAS vending machines, it allows commuters to recycle drink containers immediately after use and receive digital rewards on the spot.
Across the LRT network, 68 ATLAS ECOPOD machines have been placed at various stations, with 10 of them equipped with recycling functions. The setup encourages an easy loop. Buy a drink, finish it, recycle the container, then continue your journey.
More Stations on the Way
In total, 16 RVM units have been installed across Prasarana-operated facilities, including Menara Prasarana and the headquarters of Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd. Prasarana has also indicated it is open to private sector partnerships and sponsorships to expand the initiative to more stations.
Masjid Jamek and KLCC were selected not only for their passenger numbers, but also for their visibility. These stations are daily touchpoints for the city, where different groups of people intersect throughout the day.
Behind the scenes, the machines also collect anonymised data on usage and recycling volumes. This allows Prasarana to track participation, measure impact, and improve the programme over time based on real behaviour, not assumptions.
For Rapid KL, the effort reflects a broader shift in how stations are viewed. They are no longer just places to pass through, but everyday spaces where small actions can collectively support cleaner cities and better waste management.
A Small Change That Adds Up

The programme does not require commuters to change their routines. It simply turns an idle moment into a chance to recycle more effectively and receive something in return.
As Kuala Lumpur prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026, these smart recycling machines quietly highlight how sustainability can work best in cities: practical, visible, and built into daily life.
