Today, Bonda Rozita Ibrahim is one of Malaysia’s most recognisable female entrepreneurs. Millions know her as the founder of Sendayu Tinggi, the herbal and beauty brand that grew from a small home-based business into a nationwide name. Others know her as the mother of entrepreneur Aliff Syukri.

But long before the luxury homes, successful businesses, and thousands of distributors, Bonda Rozita’s life looked very different.

There was a time when she could not afford milk for her baby.

There was a time when she bought 50-sen clearance clothes so her children would have something to wear for Hari Raya.

There was a time when she worked multiple low-paying jobs and struggled just to put food on the table.

Most people only see the success. Few know the sacrifices that came before it.

Raised In A Humble Family And Forced To Grow Up Early

Born in Sungai Besar, Selangor, Bonda Rozita was raised in Felda Palong 7, Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, where she grew up in a modest household.

Her father served as a religious teacher and ustaz in the Felda community, while her mother was a full-time homemaker. As the eldest of six siblings, Rozita was exposed to the realities of financial hardship from a young age.

Unlike many children who grow up with the freedom to focus solely on school and personal ambitions, she learned early that survival often required sacrifice.

The challenges she witnessed within her own family helped shape the resilience, discipline, and determination that would later define her career as an entrepreneur.

Married during her teenage years, Bonda Rozita entered adulthood much earlier than most. While many of her peers were still dreaming about their futures, she was already juggling the challenges of marriage, motherhood, and the realities of adult life.

When Poverty Became A Daily Reality

After her marriage, Bonda Rozita spent much of her time helping her husband earn a living while raising their children.

The family took on various jobs to survive. She helped with rubber tapping, plantation-related work, supplying food, and operating a small grocery business in rural areas near Gua Musang.

Despite working hard, financial stability remained elusive.

One of the most heartbreaking episodes of her life occurred when she could not afford milk powder for her infant child, and she was forced to substitute milk with syrup water for her baby, who was only three months old at the time.

The family’s financial difficulties were so severe that even festive celebrations became a challenge.

While other parents bought new outfits for their children during Hari Raya, Bonda Rozita could only afford clearance clothing priced at around 50 sen per piece.

These experiences left a deep emotional impact on her. More importantly, they strengthened her determination to ensure that her children would one day enjoy opportunities that she never had.

Determined to change her family’s future, she made the difficult decision to move to Kuala Lumpur alone in search of better opportunities.

In Kuala Lumpur, she accepted various jobs to make ends meet. She worked as a production operator, receptionist, and hotel employee. At one point, her monthly salary was reportedly as low as RM350.

The RM400 Gamble

In 1997, Bonda Rozita made a decision that would change her life forever. Determined to start her own business, she pawned her jewellery and raised approximately RM400 in capital.

Using the herbal knowledge she had gained over the years, she began producing herbal products from home.

With no investors, celebrity endorsements, or large advertising budgets, she personally sold the products through direct selling, going from house to house to introduce them to customers.

To convince people that the products worked, Bonda Rozita took an unusual step. She became the first person to test them herself.

She intentionally gained weight and then used her herbal formulations to lose it again, repeating the process three times to prove the results were consistent.

By personally demonstrating the effectiveness of the formulations, she was able to build credibility with early customers and generate valuable word-of-mouth marketing.

The strategy proved successful. As more customers tried the products and shared their experiences, demand gradually increased.

Building Sendayu Tinggi, A Brand That Expanded Beyond Malaysia

In 1999, Bonda Rozita officially established Sendayu Tinggi.

The company initially operated on a relatively small scale, but consumer interest continued to grow. By the early 2000s, the brand had become increasingly recognised within Malaysia’s herbal and beauty industry.

The company eventually generated between RM10,000 and RM30,000 in monthly sales, a remarkable achievement for a business that had started with only RM400 in capital.

Over the years, Sendayu Tinggi expanded significantly. The company developed multiple subsidiaries, manufacturing facilities, logistics operations, and distribution networks.

The company’s growth continued year after year, allowing it to expand its reach beyond Malaysia and strengthen its position within the health, wellness, and beauty industry.

What began with a small amount of capital eventually became a widely recognised business brand.

A Story Of Resilience More Than Wealth

While Sendayu Tinggi’s success is impressive, the most inspiring part of Bonda Rozita Ibrahim’s story is the resilience behind it.

Throughout her life, she faced challenges that would have caused many people to give up. She experienced poverty, personal loss, financial hardship, and years of struggle while trying to build a better future for her children.

Instead of letting those difficulties hold her back, she used them as motivation to work harder and keep moving forward.

Her journey shows that success is not determined by where you start in life, but by your determination to keep going despite the challenges.
